CHARLES M. MURPHY '91

Adjunct Professor, Mercy College and College of New Rochelle

Military Police, Company of the New York Army National Guard

Mercy College helped Charles Murphy complete his education, turned his life in a new direc tion, and brought him back to his alma mater to join the adjunct faculty, a position he calls the “high water mark of his life's journey."

Charlie had successfully completed more than three years of college when he dropped out in his senior year back in 1970. Although he tried to finish his degree later, family and job de mands forced him to drop out yet again. But at Mercy, one of his first professors was Dr. Joe Victor, who had the ability, in Murphy's words to infect and reinfect one with the desire to learn and to articulate what has been learned.”

Charlie recently retired from his position as New York State Court Officer Sergeant, but continues as a Military Police Staff Sergeant with the 442nd Military Police Company of the New York Army National Guard. In September he was stationed at Fort Hamilton and was responsible for military police operations in the City of New York after the World Trade Center attack. “The expressions of gratitude and genuine concern by the public for the military police in New York City after September 11 was unbelievable and very moving."

Charlie continues as a Military Police Staff Sergeant to Operations and is now stationed at Camp Smith in Peekskill, New York. He also serves on the adjunct faculty at both Mercy College and the College of New Rochelle.
